Type of Government

The City is governed by a non-partisan City Council consisting of a mayor, mayor pro tem, and five council members. Elections are held every two years. The Mayor serves two-year terms and the council members serve staggered four-year terms. Click here to see the Charlottesville Code of Ordinances. The City Council generally holds regular meetings on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the City Council chambers in City Hall. Agendas are available on the Friday before Council meetings. Meetings are broadcast live on GTV-8, the City's government access channel on AOL Time-Warner cable system. A variety of Boards and Commissions assist in policy-making decisions. Citizens that are appointed by the City Council volunteer their time to serve. The Council also appoints a City Attorney who gives legal advice to the City, a City Clerk whose job it is to maintain official records for the City, and a City Manager who carries out the policy decisions of the Council through the City’s staff of approximately 1,100 employees.
